Important Frequently Asked Questions:

My payments are still made to the U.S. Department of Education each month; do I need to change the address of where I send my payments?
Yes. Even though you will still make your payments payable to the U.S. Department of Education, the PO Box and zip code have changed. Please send your payments to the payment address listed above. If you mail your payment to the address of your previous servicer, Direct Loan Servicing Center, it will be returned to you and this could result in your account becoming delinquent.

I recently made a payment to my previous servicer, what happens now?
Payments made to your previous servicer, the Direct Loan Servicing Center will be forwarded to GSM&R. Please allow up to 60 days for the payment(s) to be forwarded. Any payments due that you have not made to your previous servicer and future payments due must be made directly to GSM&R using the payment information listed above, please ensure you have updated this payment address with all payment services used.

  • For borrowers that have made payments to their previous servicer and are waiting for this payment to be transferred to GSM&R, please contact Customer Service to discuss a special forbearance option that may be available to ensure your student loan account remains current.

My payments are automatically withdrawn (KwikPay®) each month, will this change? Note: This is different than automatic withdrawal you may have set up with an external party bill pay service (for example your bank) please see the question below.
No. Participation in the automatic debit program (KwikPay®) including any interest rate reduction will be received by GSM&R and borrowers do not need to register for the program again. Payments debited by KwikPay® may not show on your GSM&R online account until 2 business days later but will be applied as of the date the payment was made. If your next payment is scheduled for automatic debit, we do not anticipate an interruption. However, if your payment is not withdrawn as expected, please don't hesitate to contact us immediately.

My payments are automatically withdrawn by my bank or another third party bill pay service, will this change?
Yes: Even though your payments are still made payable to the U.S. Department of Education, the PO Box number and zip code has changed. Please send your payments to the payment address listed above.

I have a billing coupon from my previous servicer; can I use this to make a payment?
No. Please note that your account number, PO Box number and zip code will change now that you are a customer of GSM&R. Please make note of this anywhere you have your account number or payment address stored. If you use an external bill pay service to pay your student loan bill each month, you will need to update the account number and payment address once you are notified the transfer of your student loan account to GSM&R is complete. Please use the new account number on any payment or correspondence with GSM&R regarding your student loan account. You can access your account number online at www.gsmr.org by logging in and creating a new account if you have not already done so.

I recently sent correspondence to my previous servicer, do I need to resend to GSM&R?
Any correspondence, forms or letters, sent to your previous servicer will be forwarded to GSM&R for 30 days after the date your loans are transferred. Once we receive your correspondence from the previous servicer, we will process the request and mail a response to the address on your account. Please understand that this process does not happen immediately, it may take up to 30 days for correspondence to be redirected to us.

My loan is currently in deferment, forbearance or I am on an alternative repayment schedule, will this change?
No. All active options such as deferment, forbearance and repayment schedules will be received by GSM&R upon transfer. You will not need to re-apply until the current option has expired.

Where can I obtain my tax information?
GSM&R will be able to supply you with tax information for transactions applied while serviced by GSM&R only. Tax information related to transactions applied at other Direct Loan Servicing Centers can only be obtained from your Direct Loan Servicing Center. For a complete list of the Direct Loan Servicing Centers, you can visit https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/additionalInformation.action.

What happens if my account is past due?
We aim to assist every one of our borrowers in every way we can in successfully meeting their student loan obligations. We will contact you if your account is past due to explore options you have to ensure successful repayment. If your account is less than 60 days past due at the time of the transfer we have applied an administrative forbearance, a limited and temporary postponement of payments, to bring your account to current and we will contact you regarding this.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have more questions. We look forward to working with you through the student loan repayment process.
