Parents & Spouses of September 11, 2001 Victims
This discharge is for borrowers whose spouse:
- Was an eligible public servant who died due to injuries suffered in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001;
- Became totally and permanently disabled due to injuries suffered in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001;
- Was an eligible victim who died due to injuries suffered in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001;
- Became totally and permanently disabled due to injuries suffered in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The discharge is also for borrowers who are:
- Eligible parents of eligible victims who either died or became totally and permanently disabled due to injuries suffered in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The parent of an eligible public servant may qualify for a discharge of a PLUS loan but does not need to provide the additional documentation required to demonstrate that the individual qualifies as an eligible public servant. The eligibility criteria for the parent of an eligible victim also apply to the parent of an eligible public servant.
The loan discharge benefit is available only for FFELP loans on which amounts were owed on September 11, 2001, and on which amounts are still owed on the date the discharge is requested by the borrower. Borrowers who loans are discharged will not be refunded any payments made on those loans by the borrower prior to the loan discharge date.
