Concord, NH- The nonprofit NHHEAF Network Organizations (NHHEAF) released the following statement by President & CEO, René A. Drouin concerning the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 3221) which is scheduled to be marked up by the House Committee on Education & Labor tomorrow morning.
“It has been an honor for NHHEAF to participate in national conversations about transforming federal student aid and increasing college affordability. New Hampshire can be proud that its Congressional representatives understand the need to dramatically increase Pell Grant funding for low-income students, encourage college awareness and preserve the role of nonprofit agencies like NHHEAF to continue to support students through successful student loan repayment.
The bill goes a long way toward protecting some of the best aspects of the Federal Family Education Loan Programs public-private partnership including innovation and expertise in student loan servicing delivered by caring professionals locally. Still, for over 45 years, in its capacity as a student loan guarantor, NHHEAF has provided value-added services such as K-12 outreach, debt management and financial literacy programs which students, parents and schools have come to rely upon. As this legislation moves forward, we look forward to working with Congress and the Administration to ensure that NHHEAF continues to have a role providing students with both high quality loan-servicing and top-notch financial literacy and college access programs.”

President Obama has released his 2010 Federal Budget, which contains a proposal calling for the elimination of the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).
Higher education is clearly a priority for his administration. We understand President Obama's intentions in supporting increased funding for the neediest students to attend college. In fact, we wholeheartedly share this goal. After all, our organization has been supporting the college goals of students and parents for over 46 years. However, we believe that all things considered New Hampshire is far better served by our local FFELP agency than a big government contractor through Direct Lending.
If you believe that New Hampshire students and parents benefit from having a local, nonprofit agency supporting the student loan program and providing free college outreach programming, I encourage you to contact your congressional representatives and senators letting them know you feel the FFELP program is important.
We hope for as many voices and perspectives as possible. Voice your support today!
Sincerely,

René A. Drouin
